Have you ever entered into a long running series halfway through and had absolutely no idea what was going on? That was my experience with long-running RPG series Kingdom Hearts when I bought Kingdom Hearts 2 on a whim with no knowledge of the first game other than the name. I quickly fell in love however, and have played the game four times across three different platforms on both Standard and Proud Mode. So why would I write about my fifth playthrough? Because I’ve yet to touch the game on the Final Mix exclusive Critical Mode, which is supposed to be a completely different game on many counts. Both player and enemy damage is boosted, HP, MP and EXP gains are cut, and ability gains are changed.
When looking at it on paper all of this doesn’t seem that substantial, but many fans of the series consider Critical Mode to be the best way to play KH2, and some even go as far as to say that it is the definitive Kingdom Hearts experience. This fifth playthrough of KH2 is for me to decide whether that’s true or not for me. Next update will be of my first impressions, stay tuned!
